When you decide to give him or her a bathe try giving them a sponge bathe; as sponge baths are much more friendlier and safer . Finally, after every diaper change be sure not to cover the umbilical cord stump with a diaper. Always make sure that , you fold down the top of your baby’s diaper to keep it away from the stump. Try only to give sponge baths to your baby particularly when the umbilical cord stump is still on. Because, sponge baths are quick and easier than other methods. They are however not only simple but helps you avoid getting water on the umbilical cord stump in the bathing process.

Firstly; on a warm and comfortable surface of your choice in your home ; lay a clean, soft and dry bath towel on the surface.

Secondly; gently remove all your baby’s clothes, and lay him or her on the surface .

Thirdly; Wet your baby’s clean soft bath sponge, drain excess water.

Forth, Gently wipe your baby’s skin in strokes. From the face towards the baby’s ears and behind his or her ears. Not forgetting the neck-folds down toward the armpits area down the little hands and in between his or her fingers. Gently whipping the back area and down towards the stomach.

NB; be sure to avoid the belly button because, you need to keep it dry .

Fifth; Pat your baby’s skin gently drying up all the areas. You can also try letting your baby Air dry naturally, in a warm environment. Then just finish the job off by pat drying your baby, for any wet areas remaining. You are doing this to prevent unpleasant odors developing on your baby.

Finally; Take your readily prepared baby aqueous cream and apply petroleum jelly on your baby and dress up your baby. Gently moisturize your little ones body with baby aqueous cream and clothe them with the readily selected loose baby clothes.

Wipe dry around and on the bellybutton area, gently with a dampened cloth and pat dry. Do not panic when you see a bit of blood secretions; and some traces of pink scar tissue or a bit of clear yellow discharge. This is normal; Because, this is a sign that your baby is undergoing a normal healing process. Most importantly, advise you to continue giving your baby sponge baths, up until their belly button is completely healed.

Once the umbilical cord stump has fallen off; you can dispose it off without fear. It is up to you what you do with it . Some people prefer throwing away in the drainage, burning it or disposing it off in the dustbin. However, some parents prefer saving it for different reasons better known to them. Which is still ok.
